Education and skills lead to better health
Education and well-developed skills have a positive effect on health (OECD, 2016). A good and complete education is not always a matter of course. There are young people who leave school without a diploma at mbo level 2 or havo/vwo level or higher. This number is decreasing significantly in Utrecht.
Explanation of terms relating to leaving school
School students up to the age of 16 are covered by the Compulsory Education Act. They are obliged to go to school. If they do not attend, then this is considered truancy. For young people between the ages of 16 and 18, the qualification requirement applies. If young people do not have an mbo level 2 or havo/vwo level diploma or higher by their 23rd birthday and leave the education, then they count as early school-leavers. If there is no obvious reason for leaving school early, it is referred to as early school leaving (schooluitval).
